Menstrie Community Council
Annual Spring-clean Day 2010
On Sunday 25th April, as part of National Clean-up Month, a dozen hardy villagers turned out to clean up what areas we could in Menstrie. We decided to tackle the burn and banks first with a couple tackling the park areas and a group of Scouts taking on the woodland.
Despite there being less rubbish than in previous years, it never fails to amaze us at the stuff people throw away and the laziness of where they throw it.
There was the usual general rubbish such as bottles, cans, wrappers and foam plastic take-away containers. (Surely there must be a more environmentally friendly way of packaging fast food?). On the banks of the burn we found two household rubbish bags in their entirety apart from having been ripped apart by crows etc. With today's refuse collection services, we should not have to resort to simply tipping rubbish in full view of everyone and in a beautiful spot such as the burn. Scooters, umbrellas and prams were in evidence as well as builders' steel rods.
I thank all the volunteers who turned out, especially the kids who helped in clearing the burn. There appeared to be more water in their wellies than remained in the burn!
