From Jim Stalker to Menstrie Community Council, June 2015
Firstly, my apologies for not sending apologies when something came up preventing me from attending your last meeting.
As we get closer to the summer recess there seem to be more meetings than usual, and more claims on our time. Education matters are to the fore: There have been several new Primary Heads appointed; Alva Primary, Banchory and St Bernadette's in Tullibody and, still ongoing, Abercromby Primary. The new Head at Abercromby will have a significant role in the preparation and planning for the new school with proposals currently out for public consultation.
A number of appeals regarding school placements are about to be held. Menstrie PS will again have 9 reserved places for next session. [Report: PDF] I don't know how many, if any, appeals there have been for Menstrie, partly because Ward Councillors don't participate in decision making on appeals in their own areas. Primary schools are having to change their curriculum as the Scottish Government has decreed that two foreign languages should be studied in Primary School as well as English.
Secondary school exams are now complete with results eagerly awaited in August. At Alva Academy Parents' Council last week the head teacher reported that the new Higher Maths and Biology papers were very difficult, not what was expected, but anomalies will be ironed out and pass marks adjusted accordingly before students receive their result.
Public consultation has also started in Tullibody on Environmental Improvement Proposals under the Scottish Govemment Scheme which Sauchie benefited from last year under the strapline of 'Making Clackmannanshire Better' which is now attributed to everything we do in Council.
I attended the Armed Forces parade and celebration in Alloa last week which was an excellent event on a nice sunny day.
As I previously indicated I have stopped regular surgeries in Tullibody and Menstrie. Full details of how to contact me are on the Council web site and I am happy to meet with constituents at mutually agreed times and locations.
I hope the Fete week is going well and look forward to attending the Gala Day on Saturday.
